How to Choose your First Guitar

Acoustic Guitar

You can start with an Acoustic Guitar, £60 to £70 is all you need to spend to get started this way. This is the option for people who haven't really decided if a guitar is for them or not yet. Buy a cheap guitar and a beginners tutor book and off you go! You can always upgrade to an electric guitar or better acoustic guitar later. Nowadays, all acoustic guitars are made to a standard specification ie.. Head with tuning gears - Neck with string nut – Body with bridge and string anchors, so you can't really go wrong. The cheapest guitar on our site at the moment is around £65 and it comes with a carry bag and free UK delivery, so you won't be breaking the bank to get started.

Just bear in mind that if you take to your new guitar and are practicing daily, it's only going to last you around a year or so, but when you are good enough to play a song all the way through, you will want to upgrade anyway.

You can start with a more expensive guitar if you wish, that will last you forever, they are priced between £100 and £300, but it is best to buy a cheaper guitar, if you are unsure, to start with.

Electro/Acoustic Guitar

If you are already an Acoustic Guitar player and are looking for your next guitar, why not upgrade to an Electro/Acoustic Guitar? These are used with Electro/Acoustic Guitar Amplifiers (which of course are different to Electric Guitar Amplifiers) We have a good range of both types of Guitar Amps on our site.

You can get yourself a good Electro/Acoustic Guitar for around £120 upwards, we have plenty on our Acoustic Guitar page.

You will need an amplifier if you are thinking of playing in a band, gigging or busking with your new Electro/Acoustic Guitar, these start at around £60 and go up to around £500 for a very professional Electro/Acoustic amp, which will also take an Electric Guitar. We have plenty on our Electro/Acoustic Guitar Amplifier page.

Electric Guitar

If you decide to start with an Electric Guitar, you must remember that you will also need an Electric Guitar Amplifier so that you can actually hear the guitar. So right away you will realise that it is not as cheap as starting with an Acoustic Guitar.

The cheapest useable Electric Guitars start at around £90 and can go up to around £8,000 – The Electric Guitars on our site start at around £90 and go up to £1600. We do a great starter guitar by Fender (the Starcaster Strat) which is currently around £90. We also do an excellent starter Electric Guitar by Epiphone (the Les Paul Special II) which is around £110. These 2 guitars are great for beginners who want to start on the electric guitar instead of an acoustic guitar.

You will need an Amplifier, as I stated earlier, and these can be found on our Electric Guitar Amplifier page. Amplifiers for Electric Guitars start at around £30 and go up to around £1600 and even more for a large Marshall Valve Head Double Stack. We only do a Marshall Solid State Half Stack on our site and even that will cost you £620, but it is well worth it to hear a guitar really rock! You will need one of these once you start playing in a band!

Guitar Accessories

You will need at least a strap and some plectrums to get you started. You may also need some spare strings, as the strings that are normally on a new cheaper guitar are a little bit heavy and harder to press down properly onto the fret board. We also supply guitar tuners which you may need to make sure you are playing in tune.

Music Books

We have a large selection of both beginners music books and actual famous groups and players music, in tab and chord form. So once you have learnt your chords, you will be able to play along with stars like Bob Dylan, The Eagles, Muse, Simon & Garfunkel, The Shadows, Bruce Springsteen and Oasis.
